Abstract
DLC coating is an excellent method to improve the friction coefficient, wear resistance and the fatigue strength of metals without a marked deterioration of the mechanical properties. Si-doped or metal-doped DLC layers have been investigated to find unique characteristics; however, the functionalities and durability of the DLC layers are closely related to the properties of the substrates. From this viewpoint, the authors investigated the effect of a hybrid surface modification including DLC coating as the final treatment. In this report, the characteristics of the surface layers, which are formed by the above-mentioned hybrid surface modification, are explained as well as their effect on the friction-wear properties and fatigue strength.
