Abstract
The authors applied anaerobic threshold (AT) which was an objective indicator of aerobic capacity, for comparing TAR control modes (CMs) of pusher-plate TAR system. The 3 CMs compared included independently ejecting ventricles, left master synchronous, and left master alternate beating. They were evaluated in 2 TAB calves with a control calf, using multistage exercise test (TAT). Arterial lactate increased at stage 4 (2 mph) in TAR calves and stage 7 (3.5 mph) in the control calf. The AT in the TAR calves was lower than that in the control calf (6.9 vs 9.9 ml/kg/min, P<0.01). However, in all hemodynamic, metabolic parameters and AT, there were no significant differences between 3 CMs. In conclusion, the AT is a useful objective indicator for comparing TAB CMs, and as far as NET up to 3 mph are concerned, the 3 CMs for a TAH are comparable.Total artificial heart, Anaerobic threshold, Multistage exercise test, Lactate, Control mode
