Abstract
On the basis of the induction of lipid peroxydation by chinof orm-ferric chelate and the accumulation of peroxidated lipid in the nervous system of experimental subacute myelo-optico-neuropathy (SMON) model, we investigated the activity of antioxidant enzymes in these patients with SMON. The subjects were 55 patients with SMON (11 men and 44 women) and 74 healthy persons (31 men and 43 women) as the controls. The erythrocyte enzyme activities of Cu, Zn-superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx) were estimated by NBT and Wendel's methods, respectively. The SOD activity of SMON group (1804±316u/gHb) was significantly (p<0.001) reduced compared with that of the control group (2012±206u/gHb). GSHPx activity of SMON group (15.2±2.5u/gHb) showed no significant change compared with that of the control group (15.2±2.8u/gHb). There were no significant correlations between age and activities of either enzyme in the control group. Thus, we speculate that those people with low SOD activity were essentially vulnerable to the oxidative stress by chinof orm administration.
