This paper aims to clarify the shape of housing lots and the planning characteristics of the 3 stories dwelling in Higashi Osaka city as the metropolitan region. Main conclusion are as follows ; 1) The typical shape of housing lots occupied by 3 stories dwellings are 2 to 3 ken in width, and 4 to 6 ken in depth. 2) The 3 stories dwellings in Higashi Osaka city are classified into 6 types on the basis of the presence of the garage, and the composition of each floor and which stories the LDK are located on. 3) The width of 3 stories dwellings are, for the most part, under 3 ken. In these dwelling widths, the most typical dweling plan types are constituted by the entrance, bath and sanitary fittings, and garage in the 1st floor, LDK in the 2nd floor, and bed rooms in the 3rd floor. 4) However, the other dwelling plan types are also produced according to the subtle differencies of the width of lots and the number of household.
