Abstract
The liquid crystalline Langmuir monolayers composed of azobenzene derivatives exhibited the spatiotemporal patterns under an illumination with linearly polarized light. The rod-like molecules coherently tilted from the water surface undergo trans-cis photo-isomerization, which is amplified by the liquid crystalline order and develops into the orientational waves associated with the molecular azimuth. The wave velocity depends on the excitation power and temperature, and is reversed when the polarization of the light changes by 90 degree.
