Abstract
The phase behavior of BABH-14, -16 and -18 cubic liquid crystals under pressure is divided into three pressure regions, i.e., low-, intermediate- and high-pressure regions. In the intermediate- and high-pressure regions, a monotropic cubic phase is formed succeedingly after the formation of the SmC(hp) phase. The I-SmC(hp)-Cub-Cr and I-Cub-SmC(hp)-Cub-Cr phase sequences are observed on cooling under high- and intermediate-pressure regions. Especially it is interesting to note that two cubic phases appear in the intermediate-pressure region. The phase behavior under pressure has been analyzed using a polarized optical microscope equipped with a high-pressure optical cell.
