Abstract
Thermal barrier coating (TBC) is generally applied to the surface of gas turbine blade in order to protect from a high-temperature combustion gas flow. However, the ceramic top coating (TC) of TBC is cracked and delaminated by thermal cyclic loading resulting from start and stop operation. In this study, the rapid thermal cycling device based on a laser irradiation was developed to appropriately produce the actual thermal cyclic condition. The cylindrical TBC specimens were exposed under a rapid thermal cyclic loading using this device. As a result, a sintered layer was formed in the vicinity of the surface of TC. In addition, both vertical and horizontal cracks were initiated and propagated in the TC. Finally, it was discussed about mechanical factor for those damages through the finite element analysis with the TBC model taking into account a sintering process.
