Abstract
Inferior mesenteric arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is a rare entity. Here we report a case of bleeding from diverticulosis of the sigmoid colon accompanied with mesenteric AVM. A 76-year-old man who did not have a past history of laparotomy or abdominal injury developed hemorrhagic stool and anemia. Colonoscopy showed an abundance of clots and diverticulosis in the sigmoid colon. Angiography of inferior mesenteric artery showed AVM in the mesentery of the sigmoid colon and dilated marginal vein following the AVM on the oral side. The inferior mesenteric vein was not observed. We assumed that bleeding from diverticulosis was induced by the elevated venous pressure caused by the mesenteric AVM near the diverticulosis. Laparoscopic resection of the affected sigmoid colon and AVM was successfully performed. After that, his symptoms improved. On CT angiography 4 months later, neither the mesenteric AVM nor the dilated marginal vein could be found. There have been no similar reports, so we report this case with a review of the literature.
