Abstract
Homeotropically aligned nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) with negative dielectric anisotropy show umbilical defect structures under an electric field. The position of defects can be stabilized when NLCs are doped with ions. In order to understand the role of doped ions, here, we perform complex impedance measurements on sample cells which exhibit the pattern formation of umbilical defects. Low frequency measurements reveal that the pattern formation is a unique orientational response occurring on a charged dielectric surface.
