Abstract
Patients suffering from severe malignant brain tumors show low five-year survival rates after neurosurgery. Therefore, there is a strong need to improve the enucleation rate of malignant brain tumors. Toward this end, high-performance and highly accurate surgery support systems are required. In addition, such systems should be usable with existing equipment and be easily installable in operation rooms. To satisfy these requirements, we proposed a microscopic image overlay navigation system. Furthermore, we developed an intraoperative real-time camera calibration algorithm can be used for the highly accurate overlay of navigation images on microscopic images. We evaluated the image overlay accuracy using an evaluation phantom. In a phantom experiment, the image overlay parameter error was 2.13 mm as compared with the Zhang camera calibration. The experimental result suggests the proposed algorithm performs highly accurate image overlay. Therefore, we believe that the image overlay navigation system developed could enable high-precision brain tumor enucleation.
