Abstract
An 85-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with severe abdominal pain. Abdominal computed tomography showed a 4.8×3.5-cm lower right abdominal mass and a “whirl sign” in the small intestine loops around the superior mesenteric artery and vein. The patient was diagnosed as volvulus of the small intestine and underwent emergency surgery. At laparotomy, a tumor was found in the jejunum about 60-cm from the Treitzʼ ligament and the small intestine was twisted 720° clockwise around the superior mesenteric artery. Torsion was released and the small intestine involving the tumor partially resected. The histopathological diagnosis was low-grade malignancy gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) of the small intestine. GIST of the small intestine associated with small bowel volvulus is a rare disease.
