Abstract
People living on coral reef islands use various resources (multi-resources) such as groundwater and spring water, which are limited water resources, and the fishery and forest resources that surround them. On the other hand, in recent years, coral reef islands have been exposed to a complex of environmental stresses, including global stresses such as rising sea temperatures and sea levels due to global warming, and a variety of local stresses caused by population growth and economic activities, and can be considered the front line of global environmental problems. In order to realize the future sustainability of the livelihoods of residents on coral reef islands in the face of environmental challenges, it is important that researchers and local people continue to work together to solve problems and increase local resilience to change. This presentation introduces the LINKAGE project of the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (RIHN), which addresses the challenges facing coral reef island communities through a trans-disciplinary approach. This project positions coral reef island systems, with their rapid water cycle, as a testing ground where global environmental change and anthropogenic impacts are most likely to appear. Then, from the perspective of multi-resource adaptive governance in coral reef island societies, the project will identify how the latest scientific knowledge and traditional knowledge based on norms and other factors are relevant to local knowledge and behavioral change.
