Abstract
To estimate bronchial mucosal blood flow (BMBF), the hydrogen gas clearance method was applied bronchoscopically in mongrel adult dogs and in patients with respiratory diseases, and the following results were obtained ; the measured BMBF values in the 4 institutions (i.e. orifices of the right and left main bronchus and the right and left diaphragmatic lobes) and the reproducibility of values determined by the present method was good. Also, BMBF values had no significant differences between the right and left institutions. The 16 clinical cases with respiratory diseases were divided into two groups : the redness group and the non-redness group, on the base of the mucosal coloration findings endoscopically, and when the BMBF of both groups were compared, the redness group showed significantly higher values compared with those of the non-redness group. Moreover, when objective evaluation of the coloration findings of the bronchial mucosa was performed with spectrophotometry at wavelengths of RED, GREEN, and BLUE, significant linear correlations were obtained between the red ratio (%RED) and BMBF at the same sites. From the above results, the present method seemed to be a useful method to obtain information on regional BMBF.
