Eco-business design has gained growing interest in recent years. However, it is often difficult to generate eco-business ideas understanding which business activities actually contribute to (or violate) the sustainability of the earth due to highly complex nature of environmental and economical system of our society. In order to help a business to generate eco-business ideas handling this complexity, this study proposes a cause-effect pattern library. Using information contained in the library, businesses can generate practical eco-business ideas, including Industrial Product Service Systems, handling various cause-effect chains in a systematic and comprehensive manner. To this end, this paper first discusses the prerequisites for eco-businesses and characterizes its ideal state using a causal loop diagram (CLD). Then, we classify the gaps between ideal eco-business and conventional ones into five categories, and explain how to structure a cause-effect pattern library focusing on the gaps. Finally, we propose an idea generation method for eco-businesses using the library, and discuss future needed developments.
