Abstract
In November 1984, algae and plankton samples were collected from 24 localities around lake of Guiers and in the lower course of the Senegal River (northern Senegal, West Africa). About 650 species and infraspecific taxa of algae were observed in the samples, among which the diatoms represent almost half of the flora (48.8%) whereas the green algae amount to 27.7% (including 10.6% for the desminds), the blue-greens to 14.5% and all the other groups together to 9%. A new species, Lepocinclis senegalensis, and a new form, Strombomonas lageniformis f. minor, are described in the Euglenophyceae; new combinations are proposed in the genera Spirocoleus (Cyanophyceae), Fragilaria (Diatomophyceae), Euastrum and Staurastrum (Desmidiaceae).
