Abstract
A thorough search of all desmid literature was carried out to determine which taxa could be included in the genus Bourrellyodesmus (Zygnemaphyceae). Thereafter, herbarium specimens of some of these taxa were examined to conclude that the following five are good Bourrellyodesmus species: B. excrescens, B. heimii, B. jolyanus, B. spechtii, and B. sumatranus. The genus was circumscribed to include all biradiate (elliptic or compressed in vertical view) forms furnished with a single spine on each side of the semicells (monospinous), and with a pattern of ornamentation made up of granules or a tubercle protruding about in the center of the semicells. The limits between Bourrellyodesmus and the desmid genera Staurodesmus, Raphidiastrum (= Staurastrum p.p.), Xanthidium, and Spinocosmarium were drawn out, and a key was presented for the identification of the five species of Bourrellyodesmus recognized in the present study. Finally, all other species previously alloted to Arthrodesmus sect. Ornatae and which were presently not transferred to Bourrellyodesmus were considered, in an attempt to define their actual taxonomic position.
