Abstract
Algae and plankton samples were collected from 34 localities in the Aïr Mountains (Southern Sahara, Niger Republic). About 530 species and infraspecific taxa were observed in these samples. The most numerous groups are the blue-green algae (20% of the flora), the diatoms (34%) and the green algae (38%) among which the desmids represent only 11% of the flora. This floristic composition matches rather well the composition of other algal floras in the Sahara and in northern Africa. Some new taxa are described, namely Cymbella hustedtii f. stigmata, Pinnularia dumontiorum, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii f. basimaculata, Provasoliella airensis, Sphaeroplea tenuis f. corrugata and Zygnema airense; some new combinations are proposed in Lyngbya (2) and in Navicula (1). Illustrations are provided, especially for the taxa not previously illustrated in works on Sahelian or Saharan algae.
