Abstract
Recent studies on religious buildings in Val Poschiavo in the Italian Grison region of Switzerland have revealed two important artistic events of extreme importance for the cultural milieu of this area. It shows a certain homogeneity and correlation with that of the Valtellina, which was influenced by cultural movements from Milan and Como during the seventeenth century. The first is concerned with a canvas by Camillo Procaccini, the Christ with A Scourge, invoked by the Virgin, St. Charles Borromeo and other Devotees an altarpiece dating from 1616-29 for the main altar in the church of St. Charles Borromeo in Aino near Poschiavo. The attribution is based on stylistic comparisons and a preparatory drawing in the Civico Gabinetto dei Disegni in the Castello Sforzesco in Milan (published by N. Neilson in 1979). The only difference between the drawing and the canvas is the absence of the figure of the Madonna, which is on Jesus' right in the canvas. The second event regards two canvases dated to ca. 1640 by the Como-area painter Antonio Crespi (known as il Bustino), the Assumption with Apostles and St. Agatha Visited by St. Peter in the church of St. Charles Borromeo in Brusio. The undisputed attribution to il Bustino is based on a document in the Archivio Diocesano in Como and on a literary source, the Giardino della Pittura, in which the seventeenth century painter Francesco Paglia from Brescia includes the two works in question among his list of numerous works by Antonio Crespi Castoldi in the Valtellina and the surrounding area.
