Abstract
On 25 April 1701, the Congregation of the Index banned Le Monde dans la Lune, the French version of John Wilkins' The Discovery of a World in the Moon. This work was banned not only because it contained arguments in favor of heliocentrism, but also because it endorsed the thesis of the plurality of worlds. It was on account of this second reason that in 1758 Wilkins could not benefit from the abolition of the general ban on libri omnes docentes mobilitatem Terrae, & immobilitatem Solis. His name, therefore, still appeared in the last edition of the Index librorum prohibitorum, published by the Church of Rome in 1948.
