Abstract
El objetivo de este artículo es mostrar como la Institución Libre de Enseñanza (ILE), a través de diversas iniciativas, mantuvo su presencia en el exilio republicano de 1939. Identificada entre los enemigos que el régimen dictatorial del general Franco había de combatir sin piedad, la ILE representaba la modernidad y el liberalismo que tanto repugnaba a las bases ultraconservadoras que habían inspirado al bando vencedor en la Guerra Civil. Las autoridades del nuevo régimen identificaron a la ILE con la anti-España, mientras el exilio reivindicó los valores republicanos, progresistas y democráticos que la Institución había encarnado.
The aim of this article is to show how the Institución Libre de Enseñanza (ILE), through several initiatives, maintained its presence in the Republican exile from 1939. It was included by the intellectual establishment of Franco’s Dictatorship among the enemies of the regime. This was also the reason why the ILE had to be fought without mercy. ILE represented modernity and liberalism both repugnant to the ultraconservative bases that had inspired the winning side in the civil war. The authorities of the new regime identified the ILE with an anti-Spain, while Republican exile claimed the republican, progressive and democratic values that the Institución Libre de Enseñanza had embodied.
