John Rittmeister was born in Hamburg in 1898 as a son of an upper class family. After studying medicine he worked in the fields of neurology, psychotherapy and psychiatry in Switzerland. During this time he was in connection with socialist students and workers. In 1937 he returned to nationalsocialist Germany. He worked as the head of Policlinic of the Institute for Psychotherapy in Berlin and founded a group of young women and men mainly belonging to the left wing of the opposition against Hitler. Later on this group went together with the groups of Schulze-Boysen and Harnack. In 1942 he was put in prison, condemned to death and killed on May 13, 1943 in Berlin-Ploetzensee. In his professional work he was dedicated to evidence and scientific based psychotherapy and the psychic illnesses of the poor people. Der 1898 geborene John Rittmeister stammte aus einer hanseatischen Kaufmannsfamilie. Nach dem Medizinstudium arbeitete er als Neurologe, Psychiater und Psychotherapeut in der Schweiz, hatte Verbindungen und war aktiv mit sozialistischen Studenten und Arbeitern. Er kehrte 1937 in das nationalsozialistische Deutschland zurück. 1939 wird er in Berlin Leiter der Poliklinik am Institut für Psychotherapie und psychologische Forschung. Er sammelt junge Menschen auch dort aus linken sozialistischen Kreisen aufklärend um sich und stößt 1941 mit diesen zu den Gruppen um Schulze-Boysen und Harnack. Er wird 1942 mit diesen verhaftet, zum Tode verurteilt und am 13. Mai 1943 hingerichtet. Sein Konzept für Poliklinik und Lehrinstitut war, krankheitsbezogenes und wissenschaftliches Erkennen mit individuellem Einsatz für den einfachen, seelisch kranken Menschen zu verbinden.
