Abstract
The use of fresh red blood cells among critically ill pediatric patients did not reduce the incidence of new or progressive multiple organ dysfunction syndrome vs. standard-issue red blood cells. In 147 of 728 fresh-issue patients and in 133 of 732 standard-issue patients, there were no significant differences in the syndrome. ICU mortality was 33 in the fresh and 26 in the standard-issue group.
