Abstract
CCTV cameras have been installed in Newcastle's West End, monitoring the socially disadvantaged neighbourhoods. They aim to regenerate local shopping facilities which have been adversely affected by vandalism and theft. The equipment, installation and monitoring has been undertaken by Newcastle City Challenge. Support for the system by the local community is mixed. Most expressed support although some a conerned that CCTV could infer suspicion and guilt to the guiltless.
