Abstract
The economic activity rate for people of working age in the North East of England was 73.2% in winter 1998 to 1999, compared with 79% for the UK as a whole. The seasonally adjusted employment rate in the region in winter 1998 to 1999 was 65.9%, lower than in all other regions in the UK. Local employment rates within the region are variable, but a cluster of districts in the North and West of the region all had employment rates of between 65% and 70% in 1997 to 1998.
