Abstract
Some 12% of the UK population lived in London, England, during mid-1997, with the highest number of people living in Kensington and Chelsea and the least in the City of London, Bromley and Havering. The average wage for a full-time male employee in London was 32% more than for the rest of Great Britain, at 566 pounds sterling per week, in Apr 1998. Unemployment in the UK was 6.2% during autumn 1998, whilst in London unemployment reached 7.6%. The highest unemployment was in Hackney at 21.5%, during Mar 1997-Feb 1998. Employment in London was 71.6% in autumn 1998 compared to 74% in the UK.
