Abstract
Thomas Hare's critique of 'Representations of Power: The Literary Politics of Medieval Japan' suffers from a loss of perspective. He fails to see the linkage between politics, arts, and aesthetics. Hare overlooks the impact of economic and legal factors in the exercise of power. His criticism of the book is influenced by the mid-eighteenth-century literary style. Hare's remarks on a mistranslation and trivialization of Zeami's work are based on wrong premises.
