Abstract
The progression to AIDS is much shorter and death rates are much higher in Uganda than in many developed countries. A study of 179 HIV patients from 15 villages in Uganda found that 2%, 6% and 22% of the patients had progressed to AIDS 1, 3 and 5 years after becoming infected, respectively. The probability of progressing to AIDs was greatest in those with the most advanced disease. The median survival time in years was about half that seen in AIDS patients in developed countries. This is undoubtedly due to the fact that many AIDS drugs are expensive and are unavailable in Africa.
