Abstract
Ca2+ signals control gene expression through selective calmodulin inhibition of basic-helix-loop-helix (bHLH) group DNA-binding domains. Signals that alter the levels of Ca2+-loaded calmodulin may exert differential effects on bHLH homo-oligomers and hetero-oligomers. The inhibition by calmodulin may occur through suppressed bHLH domain dimer formation or by blocked interactions between dimer and nucleotide sequence.
