Abstract
It appears that some factors associated with low birth weight (LBW) do not necessarily increase the risk of infant death. Risk factors were compared among 40 LBW infants who died within one year of birth and 40 LBW infants matched for sex, race, and birth weight who lived to their first birthday. Infants of mothers who planned their pregnancies, used cocaine, and had experienced a previous infant death had a significantly increased likelihood of survival.
Objective. To determine whether known maternal risk factors for low birth weight directly contribute to infant mortality among very low birth weight infants. Design. Retrospective population-based, case-control study. Setting. Four hospitals in the Oakland, California, area: one community, two private, one health maintenance organization. Participants. All live-born singleton very low birth weight (
