Abstract
The effect of changes in intracellular pH on calcium regulation was studied using cultured rat aoritc vascular smooth muscle cells. Results showed an increase in cytosolic Ca+ upon rapid rise in pH which was diminished with depletion of sarcoplasmic reticulum stores by vasopressin, uptake blocker or entry inhibitors. An acidic cellular milieu also increased Ca+ release which dspite pretreatment with inhibitors or entry blockers. The increase in Ca+ in acidification was not sensitive to inhibitors and may be due to cellular buffering mechanisms.
