Abstract
The competitive position of the UK engineering industry has strengthened dramatically since World War II, with most growth being seen during the years of the Conservative government, beginning in 1979. Prior to this date, the engineering sector's position was weakened by the rise of the newly industrialised countries, such as Japan, the slowdown in the world economy and rising oil prices. UK players have been forced to refocus on core businesses and to undertake organisational changes in order to integrate into the world market.
