Abstract
A number of factors determine the success of collecting video data to study nurse-patient communication. These include ease of access on a regular basis to the environment in which the filming is to take place, the need to depend on others for information about the timing of the event to be filmed and ease of access to a camera and other equipment. Data collection and analysis must take account of the role of the researcher as a participant observer.
