Abstract
A neutrophil-like proinflammatory (P) phenotype is expressed in a discrete human monocyte subpopulation. These P monocytes adhere to extracellular matrix upon high-level cell-surface expression of specific integrins, release reactive oxygen species, constitute serine proteinases and alpha1-proteinase inhibitor and also exhibit proteolytic activity against a soluble peptide human leukocyte elastase substrate. Monocytes do not express cell surface HLA-DR antigen, and hence do not participate in specific immune responses.
