Abstract
An analysis of the influence of humanist, Irving Babbitt on early 20th century China is presented. Babbitt drew parallels between east and west through a comparative approach to literature. He also recognised an affinity between himself and Chinese culture. His philosophy attracted a following of Chinese students who identified in his national ideals the basis of a new order for China in the 1920s.
