Abstract
Patients being treated for deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) appear to prefer heparin over a combined regimen of streptokinase and heparin because of the increased risk of death associated with the combination therapy. Thrombosis occurs when a clot forms in a blood vessel. Heparin and streptokinase prevent clotting and may increase the risk of major bleeding. Thirty-six patients were interviewed about the use of heparin and streptokinase and their possible adverse effects. Sixteen patients had previous DVT and 20 had not. Only small increases in the risk of death were acceptable to the 36 patients in order to avoid postphlebitic syndrome. Postphlebitic syndrome is a complication of DVT that causes pain and swelling.
