Abstract
A biologist recalls the influence the New Naturalist series of books published by Collins had on his education in natural history. The British, who were the first to publish illustrated guides on nature, have a rich tradition in such publishing. The series, which has become collector's items for a generation of natural history lovers, enters its 50th year in 1994.
