Abstract
An alternative pathway for the nitration of phenylalkyl ethers, phenylacetic esters and related compounds with nitrogen dioxide is discussed. It produces o-nitro derivatives in high yield and renders high ortho selectivity in the nitration of these compounds as compared to the conventional nitration of these compounds. It results in a higher yield of ortho isomers from the nitration of phenylalkyl ethers than phenylacetic esters, indicating that the pathway favors ortho substitution products.
