Abstract
An X-ray diffraction and high resolution transmission electron microscopy is used for the structural characterization of strong blue-green cooperative upconversion emission observed in Zr[O.sub.2]:[Yb.sup.3+] nanocrystals prepared by sol-gel process. The strong coorperative process among Yb ions is explained in terms of interaction enhancement due to the diminishing of Yb-Yb separation promoted partly by the surface recombination of nanocrystals.
