Abstract
Strengths of the PC keyboard are its look, its conformity to German ergonomic requirements, its key 'feel' and audible response. Weaknesses include the placement of the caps lock key and the lack of visual reminder that it is in use; the insertion of an extra key between Z and left-hand shift, the mixture of cursor movement control with numeric keys (especially for spreadsheet users); the Scroll and Numlock confusion; and the graphic symbols that mean different things on different keys. Qubie's Keytronic keyboard (which sells for 195 pounds in the United Kingdom) is a disappointing effort to overcome these flaws. While lighting the two LOCK keys is well-handled, repositioning of the SHIFT keys does not solve the SHIFT-ALT confusion, and reorganizing RETURN and # keys is not very effective. Keytronic lacks the quality of touch that the IBM PC has.
