Abstract
Colonial-era writing about Native Americans illustrates the concept that writing falsifies speech. The earliest white settlers of North America unthinkingly projected their cultural assumptions on Native Americans, whereas the best way to approach a new culture is to listen carefully and not draw conclusions only from what is seen.
