Abstract
The examination of the effects of a variety of ortho-substituents on the acidity of phenol is presented. The substitutions are made at the ortho-position to model modified tyrosine residues found in enzymes and a comparison of the substituent effects on the O--H bond strengths and the acidities indicate no simple correlation between the two.
