Abstract
The 2003 outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in Beijing, China, lasted only two months because of various control measures that were introduced. These included setting up fever clinics, building a 1,000-bed SARS hospital, training all hospital workers in infection control procedures, closing universities, schools, libraries, bars, and theaters, isolating SARS patients in wards, quarantining all close personal contacts, and screening 14 million travelers. A total of 2,521 people were diagnosed with SARS and treated.
