Abstract
The superacid-catalyzed condensation of benzaldehyde with benzene results in the formation of triphenylmethane. Experiments reveal that the O,C(aromatic)diprotonated dication is formed as the reaction intermediate. The IGLO-estimated 13C NMR chemical shifts of protonated benzaldehyde are consistent with experimentally determined data of superacid solutions.
