Abstract
Experiments were performed to measure the effects of a mutation in the Niemann-Pick C (NPC) protein in mice. The studies also sought to identify the effect of the mutation on sterol metabolism in various organs, cholesterol metabolism in the brain and intracellular cholesterol degradation in the liver. It was observed that many unsterified cholesterol do not reach the site for regulation of sterol balance and that tissues where these cholesterol lodge increase their production of sterols.
