Abstract
Researchers inoculated transgenic mice expressing the Syrian hamster prion protein (PrP) with three separate prion isolates to analyze the molecular reasons for prion diversity. The cell-specific spread of prion isolates may be the cause for the distinct characteristics that each of the isolates posess. The three isolates compared were Sc 237, 139H, and Me7H in Tg(SHaPrP)7 mice with clinical indications of scrapie because the incubation periods for hamsters are significantly longer than those for these mice.
