Abstract
The eight Umayyad ruler Abd al-Rahman III declared his caliphal title in 929 and his definition of the status provides scope for analysis of the title. His claim to the caliphal rights of khutba and sikka marked him as the leader of the muslim faithful and defined his standing against his enemies, the Fatimids and the Abbasids. So his claim had relevance to his immediate context and to the Islamic universe of his period.
