Abstract
Regrets are negative emotions experienced when people presume a different choice would have yielded a belter outcome. Existing studies identified the prevalence and types of regrets experienced by athletes using qualitative methods. These studies are useful, but labor intensive in both collection and analysis of results. As such, the current exploratory study aimed to extend regret research in athletes by developing an easy to understand and complete measure. A total of 310 NCAA athletes (men n=187; women n=123) responded to 52 statements regarding existing regrets, which were derived from previously identified regrets in the areas of relationships, sport behaviors, health, cognition, school behavior, and life skills in addition to a measure of mental toughness to establish preliminary convergent validity. Factor analysis (PCA) results reduced the scale to a one-dimensional 25-item scale, with good reliability, Cronbach s alpha =.94 and a negative relationship with mental toughness (r (308) = -.21, p < . 01). Practical uses of this measure are discussed along with suggestions for further validating these preliminary' results.
