Abstract
Analyses of a mutant protein, having modified but enhanced hydrophobic core packing, confirm that comparatively high extent of main-chain flexibility should be considered to predict the entire spectrum of compatible core sequences for the protein. A specific group of core residue identities might be chosen, not owing to their optimal stability, but to their adequate stability and the exact structure needed for optimal activity in protein evolution.
