Abstract
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), including the use of a sophisticated heart-lung machine, may constitute an effective rescue therapy for advanced meningococcal disease as an alternative to conventional therapy. Researchers documented the value of ECMO support for either cardiac shock or respiratory failure in 12 patients with meningococcal infection under the age of 18 years. Four patients died, two from brain death and two after ECMO was discontinued after multiple limb amputation. Six of the eight survivors are leading functionally normal lives.
