Abstract
A solution of benz(a)anthracene and vanillin in toluene was used to investigate the photodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons when methoxyphenols are present. A rate law and rate constants were also derived to characterize the rate of photodegradation. Meanwhile, the experimental results pointed to the hydrogen abstraction of the phenolic hydrogen from vanillin as the main rate-determining factor.
